Ronald Reagan, A Time for Choosing

Posted by: Jason | July 25th, 2008 · 10:08 AM

Every conservative, and every American for that matter, should be familiar with perhaps one of the greatest speeches in the history of this country. On October 27, 1964, on the eve of the presidential election, Ronald Reagan gave his first major political speech, A Time for Choosing, supporting Barry Goldwater as a candidate for president.

Goldwater’s quest ended later that year, as he fell in defeat to Lyndon Johnson who became the 36th president of the United States. But this speech put Reagan on the map as a serious political thinker, later propelling him to win his first election as California governor in 1966.

To say that this speech changed my life is an understatement. It allowed me to understand Ronald Reagan as not just a good man, but one of our greatest of American presidents. This speech literally brought me to tears when I first heard it, because never before have I ever heard a man argue Conservatism in a more articulate and honest way.

I chose to post only a 4 minute segment of this speech, my favorite 4 minutes. The reason I did this was because of the particular part’s relevancy to today. Reagan argues here that through pacifism and not strength, do we reach the real path to war. This is a message that is just as true in 2007, as it was in 1964.

It is important for conservatives, as well as liberals, to read this post, and watch this clip.

Unity!

Why would a conservative senator from Tennessee, whose politics outline a vision of V-Tech students defending themselves with guns, where Roe vs Wade is bad science and bad medicine, and where entitlement programs need to be overhauled, talk about a word like “unity”?

Lee and I were discussing this yesterday. He was admittedly less enthusiastic about the word, one of the three main staples of the newly formed Thompson message, citing a link to some Barack Obama cheeseball idea. And true, unity is a bit cheesy and Oprah… but let me explain here.

During Fred’s web announcement speech he talked about an appropriate subject, the War On Terror. Within it, he sited the one reason America could fail in her challenge to fight radical Islam… Unity. Why is America perceived as failing in Iraq? Unity.

DNC Taglines and Rudy Giuliani

Posted by: Jason | June 27th, 2007 · 10:57 PM

DNC

Rudy Giuliani spoke to an audience at a Maryland synagogue Tuesday evening, claiming that Israelis and Americans are now bound in the same war against Islamic militants. Mixing staple stump messages with charges of weakness towards the Democrats, this was the DNC’s response to his speech.

“Rudy’s arrogance has gotten the best of him,” the Democratic National Committee said in a one-paragraph response. “How can a man who failed to prepare New York City for a second attack after the first one, who sent firefighters and emergency workers into Ground Zero without respirators and quit the Iraq Study Group to raise money, keep America safe?”

I suppose comments like these are fair in politics. After all, Giuliani hasn’t shied away from his belief that electing Democrats would embolden terrorists, so they have every right to retaliate. However, in hearing the DNC taglines, I’m reminded of just how out of touch they are. So the former mayor “failed to prepare New York City for a second attack after the first one”?

Remind me again, which party held the White House during the first trade center bombing, as well as during endless Al Qaeda attacks including various embassies and the USS Cole? No, that isn’t a suggestion of failure on the part of Bill Clinton necessarily, but rather a belief that taglines such as these show signs of unhealthy discourse among Democrats today.

The issue at hand is in modern day, as in who will protect and defend this nation more. We could compare a lack of prepardness between Giuliani and our Democratic friends, to which I’m sure we already know the loser of that debate. But let’s start talking again about how today, not in the 90’s, the Democrats are willing to understand the nature, as well as the location, of terrorists fighting against us. I may not agree with Rudy Giuliani on many issues, but regarding this one, he’s not the one I’m worried about.

Unsung Heroes

The title to this particular tribute to Aussie soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan rings a special truth to it. We often forget our friends the Australians, a nation in constant support and alliance with the United States in the War On Terror.

Iran and Weakness

Posted by: Jason | June 6th, 2007 · 10:46 PM

What am I missing with regard to the Iran situation? They are the leading sponsor of terrorism in the world, who are developing nuclear capabilities (supposedly one of the reasons for war with Iraq), making blatantly obvious statements about the destruction of one of our allies in Israel, providing assistance, weapons, and training to anti-American forces in Iraq, and aiding the Taliban as Afghanistan is heating up again.

This is a travesty! Where is the leadership in the Bush Administration? Before every threatening nation from Russia to North Korea smell blood in the water, could we please act on this with retaliation?

From ABC:

NATO officials say they have caught Iran red-handed, shipping heavy arms, C4 explosives and advanced roadside bombs to the Taliban for use against NATO forces, in what the officials say is a dramatic escalation of Iran’s proxy war against the United States and Great Britain.

“It is inconceivable that it is anyone other than the Iranian government that’s doing it,” said former White House counterterrorism official Richard Clarke, an ABC News consultant.

Thompson’s Top Priorities

Posted by: Jason | June 5th, 2007 · 11:19 PM

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity this evening, undoubtedly for post-debate press, Fred Thompson was asked an interesting question during the discussion. He was asked, in his first 100 days in office, what would be his top priorities. Due to time restraints he was only able to answer 3, but I’ve added one from the direction of his previous speeches:

1. Giving a major speech to the American people about the need to come together to face daunting challenges in foreign policy, and calling on the world to recognize a global threat by radical Islamists who are attempting to “pick the civilized nations apart one by one”.

This Dude Doesn’t Get It

Somewhere between hell and purgatory lies the Hardball program hosted by Chris Matthews. There you will find a sea of uncertainty, where guests are unable to speak and pundits are as neutral as the Japanese were in WW2. Unbearable to watch I’ll admit, but I found myself wrapped up in a particular debate during my 6pm dinner hour this evening.

If you’re to view this program, you have to take it with a grain a salt. You cannot expect to come out of it a sane man, or you will be surely disappointed. But the Chris Matthews show does sharpen one’s perception of the mainstream left, giving us an idea of what folks like this think about on a daily basis. It’s a darn scary world my friends.

McCain: Can’t Get it Right

Posted by: Jason | May 16th, 2007 · 8:34 AM

Mr. McCain… The country has just suffered multiple terrorist attacks, more are said to be on the way, and we’ve caught three suspects trying to escape the country who we believe may be behind them. What do you do? “Well… I’ll tell you what you don’t do, torture them”.

Tom Tancredo said it best last night, and it speaks volumes to why John McCain may be a war hero, but just doesn’t get the world. Western civilization, as Tancredo put it, rests in the hands of the United States. If this nation falls, so do all the rest, because we won’t be here to protect them anymore. And during a crisis such as the hypothetical question laid out by Brit Hume yesterday evening in Fox’s Republican debate, you don’t think about the dangers of water boarding, and how its use might affect world opinion in a time of crisis.

2nd Republican Debate = Sigh of Relief

Posted by: Jason | · 8:19 AM

(image: fox)

Thank God for Fox News Channel. And I mean that sincerely. By leaps and bounds, whether you are a liberal or a conservative, hell… if you have a damn pulse… you can now understand why Chris Matthews and company rank somewhere near the doghouse as compared to a real network such as the one that hosted last night’s 2nd Republican debate.

The candidates were sharp, they were engaging, and I think for the first time, myself speaking for many other Republicans I’m sure, that we can all breath a sigh of relief. This party is full of life, and we have ourselves a real race now. Assuming the entrance of Fred Thompson, and possibly Newt Gingrich, this should serve as one of the more entertaining years in presidential politics. I’m excited for the future debates.
