Tommy! Endorses Rudy

Posted by: Jason | October 12th, 2007 · 12:49 PM

In the first endorsement from a former GOP presidential candidate, Tommy! has thrown his hat in and endorsed Rudy Giuliani for president:

“Rudy Giuliani has shown that he is a true leader. He can and will win the nomination and the presidency. He is America’s mayor, and during a period of time of great stress for this country he showed tremendous leadership,” Thompson, the former Wisconsin governor, said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press.

Iowa Straw Poll: A Candidate By Candidate Analysis

Posted by: Jason | August 12th, 2007 · 8:11 PM

So I thought it would make for a fun exercise to examine the implications of the recent Iowa Straw Poll. Why do I care about this every 8 years tradition? It’s the first time we start to see candidates out of the race.

#1 Mitt Romney: First off, kudos. Romney’s speech was fantastic. Not necessarily how it was delivered (though Romney does command attention), but the words themselves. It was above his recent standards. As to the win… He’s a politician, so naturally that means he has to hoot and holler as if this means something. Gee… You won without Rudy, Fred, or McCain in. Hardly impressive. But the fact that his campaign mounted a massive organization to force them from even competing is. Romney may be a real contender (for now).

#2 Mike Huckabee: I was glad to see Huckabee in second place. Why? Because out of the lot that was in that day, he was the best candidate. I admit, I secretly root for Huckabee to do better than he does. He’s the kind of guy you’d want in the White House at times, because you know he’s honest. What’s impressive is how a man with practically no organization in Iowa comes in second on pure oratory skill. He gives the best speech out of any candidate.

More Sanford…

Posted by: Jason | June 21st, 2007 · 12:25 AM

Sorry folks, this speaks to a little infatuation I may have for the South Carolina governor. But I tend to raise my brow towards Republicans who win landslide elections in 2006 and then go on to talk about how we should begin to embrace 1994 rhetoric of cutting entire departments in Washington again.

Enjoy this older interview of Mark Sanford on Tucker Carlson’s program, just after the first GOP debate in South Carolina.

Against Iraqi Oil Accounts

Posted by: Ion | June 3rd, 2007 · 11:03 AM

Deroy Murdock has a piece today on Tommy!’s idea for Iraqi oil savings accounts. The idea basically involves giving 1/3rd of all oil profits to every Iraqi:

“If every man, woman and child is getting part of the oil proceeds, they will have a vested interest in their country.” He adds by phone: “This is the best way to build the country and secure the peace.”
(Washington Times)

Deroy’s only objection to the plan is that it isn’t more generous. He recommends half of oil profits be dispensed indiscriminately to the public.

We might remind Deroy that the United States is still a major oil producer, and thereby invite the question of whether importing this plan to our country would be an equally good idea. We suspect Deroy would not be very fond of this scheme for rather obvious reasons. Namely that something given has no value and thus will tend to devalue the currency before it builds individual wealth, if it is equitably distributed across the entire population.

A better course would be to privatize the entire oil industry (something Deroy also recommends), but instead of issuing dividends to everyone, allow every Iraqi to buy common stock in these private enterprises. What needs to be created in Iraq is an investment atmosphere, not a larger welfare state.

Rethinking Inclusion: John Cox and the Republican Debates

We’ve received quite a reaction to our Petition Against Ron Paul’s Inclusion in Future Republican Presidential Debates. Paul’s following yields a particular class of people (ehmm), and thus we saw the intellectually dishonest charges of censorship coming a mile away.

But I’ve been reconsidering inclusion in the Republican party’s presidential debates, not for any sympathy for Ron Paul, we’ve covered that already. Actually, for another candidate, Illinois businessman John Cox.

Romney in Iowa

Posted by: Ion | · 2:17 AM

It appears that Mitt Romney’s heavy commitment to building networked political support in Iowa is finally paying dividends. Looking at the latest Des Moines Register poll Romney has made substantial gains to place him firmly in the lead. Gains by Tommy! are significant too; he’s now in fourth place.

Iowa polls

Properly networked and exposed, the strongest electable social conservative tends to have a considerable advantage in Iowa. Clearly, that’s Romney at present. Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post, points out that the structural advantages of social conservative identification are enormous:

2nd Republican Debate = Sigh of Relief

Posted by: Jason | May 16th, 2007 · 8:19 AM

Thank God for Fox News Channel. And I mean that sincerely. By leaps and bounds, whether you are a liberal or a conservative, hell… if you have a damn pulse… you can now understand why Chris Matthews and company rank somewhere near the doghouse as compared to a real network such as the one that hosted last night’s 2nd Republican debate.

The candidates were sharp, they were engaging, and I think for the first time, myself speaking for many other Republicans I’m sure, that we can all breath a sigh of relief. This party is full of life, and we have ourselves a real race now. Assuming the entrance of Fred Thompson, and possibly Newt Gingrich, this should serve as one of the more entertaining years in presidential politics. I’m excited for the future debates.

The Two Percent Rule

Hey Jas, get a load of this wackiness. The final results of the Newsmax GOP debate poll on who won:

Tommy Thompson: 2 percent
(Political Derby)

I’m sorry, but it’s just impossible to conclude Tommy! won that debate, when I can’t even remember anything he had to say in it. I challenge you Jas, to quote one of his statements without using a reference. Come to think of it, I challenge you to quote anything Tommy! ever had to say about anything.

This is a tough task. He’s one of those figures who when he begins to speak, you find yourself drifting to stare out a window until another voice breaks the monotony.
