Iowa Straw Poll: A Candidate By Candidate Analysis

So I thought it would make for a fun exercise to examine the implications of the recent Iowa Straw Poll. Why do I care about this every 8 years tradition? It’s the first time we start to see candidates out of the race.

#1 Mitt Romney: First off, kudos. Romney’s speech was fantastic. Not necessarily how it was delivered (though Romney does command attention), but the words themselves. It was above his recent standards. As to the win… He’s a politician, so naturally that means he has to hoot and holler as if this means something. Gee… You won without Rudy, Fred, or McCain in. Hardly impressive. But the fact that his campaign mounted a massive organization to force them from even competing is. Romney may be a real contender (for now).

#2 Mike Huckabee: I was glad to see Huckabee in second place. Why? Because out of the lot that was in that day, he was the best candidate. I admit, I secretly root for Huckabee to do better than he does. He’s the kind of guy you’d want in the White House at times, because you know he’s honest. What’s impressive is how a man with practically no organization in Iowa comes in second on pure oratory skill. He gives the best speech out of any candidate.

Brownback on Mitt-Amorphasis

Doing exactly what he SHOULD be doing as a conservative candidate who cannot win the presidency, the Sam Brownback campaign decided this week to directly attack the credibility of Amigo Mitt Romney on his evolved positioning in becoming a conservative.

For immediate release, the Brownback campaign proposed a new word addition to the dictionary, “mitt-amorphasis”, defined below:

New word “Mitt-amorphasis” Proposed to DictionaryDES MOINES - The Brownback for President Campaign announced today it is officially proposing a new word be added to Webster’s Dictionary: “Mitt-amorphasis.”

Below are the details for the proposed word.

MITT-AMORPHASIS

Pheonetic:

Mitt-a-mor-pha-sis

Definition:

1. (v) A self-directed and self-contradictory cyclical process, occurring in even-numbered years, by which a Massachusetts politician transforms at will.

2. (v) The evolutionary process by which a member of the species homosapiens becomes a dolphin.

3. (v) The synchronized revolution at any given point in time consistent with the changing political winds

Usage:

1. Franz Kafka clearly understood the dangers of mitt-amorphasis.

2. John Kerry personified mitt-amorphasis, and others have taken it to new levels

3. The mitt-amorphasizing agent caused the politician to grow gills and flippers.

2nd Republican Debate = Sigh of Relief

Thank God for Fox News Channel. And I mean that sincerely. By leaps and bounds, whether you are a liberal or a conservative, hell… if you have a damn pulse… you can now understand why Chris Matthews and company rank somewhere near the doghouse as compared to a real network such as the one that hosted last night’s 2nd Republican debate.

The candidates were sharp, they were engaging, and I think for the first time, myself speaking for many other Republicans I’m sure, that we can all breath a sigh of relief. This party is full of life, and we have ourselves a real race now. Assuming the entrance of Fred Thompson, and possibly Newt Gingrich, this should serve as one of the more entertaining years in presidential politics. I’m excited for the future debates.

Musical Tastes of the Candidates

The AP continues their mildly entertaining “personal interests of the candidates” series, this time with musical favorites.

Unlike with their film list, it’s a fairly saccharine range. The strangest outcome being Huckabee’s taste for Evanescence. Although perhaps that’s explained by their Arkansas origin as the AP thinks. My call is with Romney for best taste (relatively speaking) on this one.

Two thousand years ago, Marcus Aurelius observed in his Meditations, that it was absurdly wrong that man’s spirit so often surrenders before his body has begun to. There are few occasions where that sad reality is as true as in Darfur, where systematic genocide by the Government of Sudan (GOS) was dismissed as inevitable, hopeless, or irrelevant by the world long before even the most minimal efforts had been made to confront or stop it. The international community’s body was strong, but its spirit was hollow.

But what has been largely true of international politics, was not true of everyone. In 2004, a young man named Brian Steidle was hired by the African Union as an international observer in their mission to document enforcement of the then tentative ceasefire agreement in the war in Darfur. This book is a product of his experiences there, as that ceasefire (never genuinely observed by Sudan), collapses and open violence spreads.
