Ron Paul: Civil War Skeptic

Posted by: Jason | December 27th, 2007 · 12:50 AM

We generally ignore the amusing politics of Ron Paul on this website, but this little snippet from last weekend’s Meet The Press appearance couldn’t go unmentioned.

According to Congressman Paul this past Sunday, when asked by Tim Russert for his views on the necessity of the Civil War, Lincoln’s preserving the Union was merely a scheme to “enhance and get rid of the intent of the original republic”. After essentially agreeing with the southern position, Paul states that by simply “buying the slaves”, Lincoln would have prevented all southern animosity towards the north’s opposing view of popular sovereignty.

As a mild historian, I know these suggestions to be inaccurate. As one who can compare the views of Mr. Paul to the vast majority of Civil War historians, I know them to be ludicrous. Paul’s recent comments come in addition to his constant misunderstanding of military affairs throughout history, which include refuting America’s policy toward the World War II conflict as well. Congressman Paul continues to show himself a careless buffoon whose ideas are not only dismissible, but outright devoid of any reality whatsoever.

Liberal Democrats For Ron Paul

Posted by: Jason | October 9th, 2007 · 3:55 PM

Sparing you all the wasted moments in life you’d give up by actually visiting the Ron Paul website, I took the liberty of checking in today with the campaign that keeps on giving (lunatic rantings and spastic fans).

For the “rational” Ron Paul supporters among us (I don’t suppose they exist but just in case…), it may interest you to know that Congressman Paul’s website features a giant banner on the homepage claiming “Party Affiliation Change Deadlines!”, a helpful link designed to give information to all non-Republicans seeking to vote for Ron Paul.

Gee… Call me silly… but why would the “only true conservative” in this race be resorting to the recruitment of liberal Democrats, independents, and other troubled souls belonging to loser third party movements? Answer? You guessed it… Ron Paul is not a Republican!

If you get anything out of this short lived Ron Paul moment here at PP, know this. As my partner here correctly pointed out today, Paul’s stockpile of cash won’t go to the eventual nominee of his “supposed party” in 2008, he’ll simply horde it for future congressional races. We believe this to be deceptive, manipulative, and if Ron Paul had any courage or decency he’d cease in lying to his supporters about any real chance of winning the nomination to profit in campaign cash.

Iowa Straw Poll: A Candidate By Candidate Analysis

Posted by: Jason | August 12th, 2007 · 8:11 PM

(image: sptimes)

So I thought it would make for a fun exercise to examine the implications of the recent Iowa Straw Poll. Why do I care about this every 8 years tradition? It’s the first time we start to see candidates out of the race.

#1 Mitt Romney: First off, kudos. Romney’s speech was fantastic. Not necessarily how it was delivered (though Romney does command attention), but the words themselves. It was above his recent standards. As to the win… He’s a politician, so naturally that means he has to hoot and holler as if this means something. Gee… You won without Rudy, Fred, or McCain in. Hardly impressive. But the fact that his campaign mounted a massive organization to force them from even competing is. Romney may be a real contender (for now).

#2 Mike Huckabee: I was glad to see Huckabee in second place. Why? Because out of the lot that was in that day, he was the best candidate. I admit, I secretly root for Huckabee to do better than he does. He’s the kind of guy you’d want in the White House at times, because you know he’s honest. What’s impressive is how a man with practically no organization in Iowa comes in second on pure oratory skill. He gives the best speech out of any candidate.

McCain Woes, Paul Soars…

Posted by: Jason | July 7th, 2007 · 10:46 AM

Well… Not quite.

A day old story from ABC, found via Drudge, but too juicy to pass up in case you haven’t heard. It looks like Senator McCain may be in bigger trouble that we thought.

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos Reports: Though often regarded as a longshot candidate for president, Republican Ron Paul tells ABC News that he has an impressive $2.4 million in cash on hand after raising an equal amount during the second quarter, putting him ahead of one-time Republican frontrunner John McCain, who reported this week he has only $2 million in the bank.

In an exclusive interview taped Friday and airing Sunday on “This Week,” Paul said his campaign is on a better trajectory than McCain’s.

“I think some of the candidates are on the down-slope, and we’re on the up-slope,” said Paul.

Ouch… It’s one thing to slump in the polls, another to be lagging behind in the money race to Ron Paul, who registers somewhere around the 1% mark in Republican support. Sure, the Paul campaign isn’t short of conspiracy theory wackos who support him through internet contributions, but for McCain, the former frontrunner, to sink this low is truly remarkable. As Lee mentioned sometime ago, this is getting to the point of being uncomfortable to watch.

For the sake of any honor you have left Senator McCain, leave the race soon.

More Truther Madness

Posted by: Jason | June 28th, 2007 · 9:44 PM

Are Ron Paul supporters in permanent conspiracy mode? How does one get to a point in life where they believe that Jewish bankers are controlling the world, 9/11 was an inside job, and now this.

Gone Resistance expresses his personal understanding of the Thompson campaign, and its minimal schedule of speech appearances:

Has anyone else noticed Fred Thompson isn’t even really campaigning? Other people are doing all the work for him, he isn’t even making appearances. Do you know why he isn’t making appearances? He has Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He has to take an IV treatment which drastically lowers your immune system to combat the lymphoma, called Rituxan. If Fred Thompson is not in good enough health to campaign or debate, is he really in good enough health to get your vote for President? Vote for a man who is in good health, with tons of experience, great character, and great ideas. Vote for Ron Paul.

Um… Yeah. Shoddy jab at best. But while this guy’s candidate is hovering around .5% in the national polls, didn’t he get the memo that Fred Thompson, who’s getting press for doing just about anything from eating to visiting a gun shop, is currently ranked at second place if not leading some presidential polls? The truthers might want to listen to Thompson when he talks about running a new kind of campaign, after all, it’s kind of working.

More Sanford…

Posted by: Jason | June 21st, 2007 · 12:25 AM

Sorry folks, this speaks to a little infatuation I may have for the South Carolina governor. But I tend to raise my brow towards Republicans who win landslide elections in 2006 and then go on to talk about how we should begin to embrace 1994 rhetoric of cutting entire departments in Washington again.

Enjoy this older interview of Mark Sanford on Tucker Carlson’s program, just after the first GOP debate in South Carolina.

Rethinking Inclusion: John Cox and the Republican Debates

We’ve received quite a reaction to our Petition Against Ron Paul’s Inclusion in Future Republican Presidential Debates. Paul’s following yields a particular class of people (ehmm), and thus we saw the intellectually dishonest charges of censorship coming a mile away.

But I’ve been reconsidering inclusion in the Republican party’s presidential debates, not for any sympathy for Ron Paul, we’ve covered that already. Actually, for another candidate, Illinois businessman John Cox.

The Pitbull

In my household, the day of a Republican debate is like Christmas morning for a 7 year old kid. During debate-eve, I’m out at the grocery story buying various foods in preparation for my obvious night in front of the television the next day. The day of, I wake with a sense of selfish happiness, awaiting the clock to strike the hour in which my viewing pleasures begin. OK… Maybe I don’t have a life, or could be considered a dork when it comes to politics.

To make matters worse for those around me not into this cult-like behavior, most notably my wife, I also enjoy the dreaded “second viewing” days after. And regarding Tuesday night’s South Carolina Republican debate, I just finished my second screening about an hour ago.

In my defense, I do this blog, so I thought that going back without any distractions of adrenaline or fresh answers to distort an objective opinion might serve me well, and it did. Granted, politics is initial reaction, and then boosts or declines due to those immediate interpretations, but this debate was totally different, at least in terms of who I was impressed with after seeing it a second time.

2nd Republican Debate = Sigh of Relief
