Biden vs Romney: A Mistake for McCain

Posted by: Jason | August 23rd, 2008 · 1:17 PM

Since when did Mitt Romney become the consensus choice for conservatives anyway? Lest we remember, this is the man who spent millions upon millions of dollars of his own money, only to loose in a state like Iowa which he’d spent years campaigning in, to a low-funded preacher from Arkansas. Lest we remember, this is a man, who just years ago as governor of Massachusetts, was defending a woman’s right to choose, supporting not only gay marriage, but the elimination of “don’t ask don’t tell”, and who was sponsoring liberal government-mandated health insurance programs.

But mere flip-flops, the risk of Obama airing negative ads filled with material Romney has used on McCain in the past, a downright mystery over where the man really stands on politics, and having zero geographical play are not the major, or should I say, only reasons why I don’t support Mitt Romney for McCain’s VP choice. Put bluntly, this man would get swallowed alive by Joe Biden in a one-on-one debate, and surviving the VP debate should be step one in any candidates selection.

John McCain, in my opinion, will make a grave mistake by putting Mitt Romney on the ticket if he does. While certainly better than a Tom Ridge, Romney hardly has the conservative credentials that are the stuff lasting core values are made of, he’s about as anti-blue collar a Republican I can think of (an area John McCain needs to exploit his junior elitist opponent on), and was somewhat damaged goods after the primary debates, often seeming testy and red-faced whenever attacked. I can only imagine the ass-whoopin’ Joe Biden would put on him, similar to the infamous Cheney/Edwards debate.
McCain should yield to a more acceptable, or, less controversial choice, than a guy half of us in Republicanland have spent the last year disliking.
