McCain gave an excellent speech tonight…

Is anyone else really coming around to John McCain’s speeches lately? Once a broad exercise in non-specifics, McCain has now launched into full-on attack mode towards his future Democratic rivals on political philosophy, substance, and ability to lead.

Clinching the state of Wisconsin this evening, McCain addressed the crowd and gave perhaps the most honest assessment of how he’ll attack the Democrats this fall. Some choice statements:

“I will fight every moment of every day in this campaign to make sure Americans are not deceived by an eloquent but empty call for change … that promises no more than a holiday from history and a return to the false promises and failed policies of a tired philosophy that trusts in government more than the people.”

Hitting the “empty rhetoric” theme hard will be essential in proving Senator Barack Obama unfit for the presidency, but it’s within this second statement that I find more favor. Notice the choice words such as “confused leadership” and actual examples (these were surprisingly unavailable within Obama’s speech) of where his future opponent has mistaken his facts and suggested dangerously idiotic ideas in his foreign policy.

“Will the next president have the experience?” he asked. “Or will we risk the confused leadership of an inexperienced candidate who once suggested bombing our ally, Pakistan, and suggested sitting down without preconditions or clear purpose with enemies who support terrorists and are intent on destabilizing the world by acquiring nuclear weapons?”

Very… very good stuff.

Pssst… They Can’t Attack HIM

Notice any attacks on John McCain lately by Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama? I’ll give you some:

“Bush-McCain Republicans” (recent term being used in stump speeches).

“A vote for John McCain is a vote for a third Bush term on everything from Iraq to the economy.”

Senator Obama may be shocked to learn that President Bush isn’t running against him by the time he locks up the nomination, but we’ll sure be there to remind him. In the face of running a general election against McCain, who’s proven to attract Independents as well as Republicans, I’m not buying this line of attack will work.

On the other hand, I’m quite enjoying the emergence of what seems to be our case against the very gifted, yet very inexperienced senator from Illinois. From a McCain speech earlier this week:

“To encourage a country with only rhetoric rather than sound and proven ideas that trust in the strength and courage of free people is not a promise of hope. It is a platitude.”
