Glasgow Attack Linked to London

Posted by: Ion | · 7:22 PM

Hesitant to confirm at first, UK police are now saying the Glasgow terror attack is linked to the London bombing attempts:

The attack on Glasgow’s airport on Saturday using a four-wheel-drive vehicle was linked to the foiled car-bomb plot in London, Scottish police said.

“I can confirm that we believe the incident at Glasgow airport is linked to the events in London yesterday,” Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Willie Rae told reporters.

More on the New Hampshire Trip

Posted by: Jason | · 8:04 AM

As Carl Cameron put it, in Lee’s Fox roundup of Fred Thompson’s trip to New Hampshire this week, his sitting down with the Union Leader was of importance due to their reputation of making or breaking campaigns traveling through the state.

Knowing the politics of the paper and how influential they are, this quick description by the Leader towards Thompson’s politics was very favorable:

But aside from his acting career, Thompson also has a long resume of political service, including eight years as a U.S. senator from Tennessee, where his defense of limited government and the division of power between the state and national levels put him on the losing side of a few 99-1 votes.

Thompson said he asked two questions of any bill that came up for a vote.

“Number one, should the government be doing this and number two, if it should, at what level should the government be doing it?” Thompson said.

The Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, he said, were sometimes forgotten but still very relevant to today.

Republicans, he said, must also tap into the wisdom of the ages, which teaches that there is such a thing as human nature, which is subject to error but also is capable of aspiring to and achieving great things.

Interpol Leaks!

Posted by: Jason | June 29th, 2007 · 10:26 PM

Track leaks to the new Interpol album, Our Love To Admire, due for American release on July 10th, are popping up all over YouTube. The first track below, the opening score titled Pioneer to the Falls, is HIGHLY recommended by this PP writer.

The song gives you Jim Morrison style vocals over movie score grade hooks and a touch of classic Interpol wall of sound. Pay close attention around the 3:20 min mark, this is beautifully moving music. No full review yet as I’ve yet to here the entire album, but expect one immediately after the official release.

Tough Talk from Thompson and Indie Voters

Posted by: Ion | · 4:22 PM

Fred Thompson, responding to the recent surge in Democratic criticism of him:

“I just say keep it up, guys. These are the things that you talked about in the 1994 campaign when I first ran, and it got you within 20 points of me.”
(The Hill)

As Jas pointed out the other day, the sudden Democratic criticism is odd, given that they’ve largely ignored the Three Amigos thus far.

I’d like to see whatever the internal poll found, that spooked Howard Dean into attack mode. In the public polling Hill and Obama are still besting Thompson (if by decreasing margins). Were it me, I’d say that’s just the result of the full GOP vote coming online, as it slowly consolidates behind FDT.

But I’m guessing Dean has creepy numbers on Indies trending Thompson heavily. Particularly given the type of criticism they’ve leveled. Labeling him as an “insider-outsider” last week, is a message targeted to the independent voter. The kind of voter who lists “politics as usual” and “special interests,” as the top problems the country is facing.

Fred Thompson Seen As Most Conservative GOP Candidate

Posted by: Jason | · 4:08 PM

(image: rasmussen)

A new Rasmussen Reports poll out today suggests that voters consider Fred Thompson to be the most conservative of all other GOP candidates. Mitt Romney finished second, followed shortly after by John McCain.

Thompson 44%, Romney 42%, McCain 38%, Huckabee 25%, Giuliani 23%

Thompson’s stock as a reliable conservative rose this month by 7 points, while McCain lost 10 points, in part due to the latest immigration fiasco, and because… well… we’re starting to remember how much McCain sucks again.

In a seperate poll, Hillary Clinton scored the highest in both the “liberal” and “moderate” categories. Other scores of well-known candidates such as Rudy Giuliani featured more complete percentage breakdowns, suggesting the public has already formed its opinion on such candidates. These results are positive for candidates like Thompson and Barack Obama, as they have room to grow more favorable.

Vandalizing Marriage

Jennifer Hoes
(photo: Zipser)

Do you remember Jeniffer Hoes? I blundered into this old story on Digg yesterday and was struck by it. In 2001, the Netherlands rewrote its marriage laws to include…well, just about anything. 2003, the newly permissive definition of who you could marry was exploited by a studio artist, who married herself.

For me this was unsurprising. It should seem obvious that once you begin to redefine marriage to accommodate gay unions, it becomes very difficult to prevent another modification for something else. If you can claim the authority to modify an ancient tradition based solely on a self-selected modern moral mandate, so too can anyone else on those same grounds.

Singles frustrated with trying to find a spouse now have a solution, thanks to the new re-definitions of marriage. A woman in the Netherlands is getting married to herself. 30-year-old Jennifer Hoes has set the date for May 28. She has her wedding dress, her friends and family have their invitations, and the dinner will cost $22,000. The wedding itself will be in the city hall of Harleem. Apparently, in the anything-goes marriage laws of the Netherlands, the wedding will be legal.

She told Dutch and German newspapers that she will vow to “love, respect and honor” herself in good times and in bad. “We live in a ‘Me’ society,” she said. “Hence it is logical that one promises to be faithful to oneself.”
(World Views)

Perhaps no story better demonstrates that when marriage means everything, it means absolutely nothing.

Obama Beating Hill in Fundraising (Again)

Posted by: Ion | · 3:50 PM

One would think this has to be getting a little disconcerting for the Clinton campaign. According to an email sent to supporters from Clinton advisor Howard Wolfson, Hillary expects to have raised $27m in 2Q 2007. Quite a haul. Alas, Obama is doing even better:

“While that figure is record-setting, we do expect Sen. Obama to significantly out raise us this quarter,” Wolfson wrote.
(The Hill)

Now, I agree with conventional wisdom that says Hillary will win the nomination and Obama is merely this election’s transient Democratic tease. But how does that keep happening?

Hillary should be far exceeding Obama, if he is indeed the Howard Dean-esque fantasy candidate. Letting Barack come anywhere near her corrodes “investor” confidence. More materially, it creates an enormous hurdle down the road, when the primaries turn into prime-time television warfare. Each dollar Obama raises, is a dollar Hillary has to cancel out.
